Quo Vadis?

Quo vadis? is a Latin phrase meaning "Where are you going?" or "Whither goest thou?".

So, I ask myself, Quo Vadis? Not this evening, not tomorrow, not this weekend, not this fall... Where am I going in my life? Where am I headed to?

Like many of you, I too am a huge fan of the following lines penned by the inimitable Mahakavi...

தேடிச் சோறுநிதந் தின்று - பல
சின்னஞ் சிறுகதைகள் பேசி - மனம்
வாடித் துன்பமிக உழன்று - பிறர்
வாடப் பலசெயல்கள் செய்து - நரை
கூடிக் கிழப்பருவ மெய்தி - கொடுங்
கூற்றுக் கிரையெனப்பின் மாயும் - பல
வேடிக்கை மனிதரைப் போலே - நான்
வீழ்வேனென்று நினைத் தாயோ?

So every time I am confused about my future, I resort to reminding myself of the above lines and I gain confidence. But then what next? I especially mutter the line “Veezhven ena ninaithaayo” and keep marching ahead. Like a temporary boost of caffeine this line energizes me and pushes me forward.

But then I feel the real crux is in the lesser known but equally significant 2nd stanza...

நின்னைச் சிலவரங்கள் கேட்பேன் - அவை
நேரே இன்றெனக்குத் தருவாய் - என்றன்
முன்னைத் தீயவினைப் பயன்கள் - இன்னும்
மூளா தழிந்திடுதல் வேண்டும் - இனி
என்னைப் புதியவுயி ராக்கி - எனக்
கேதுங் கவலையறச் செய்து - மதி
தன்னை மிகத்தெளிவு செய்து - என்றும்
சந்தோஷங் கொண்டிருக்கச் செய்வாய்...

Here even the great Bharathi bows before the Almighty GOD, the decider of our destiny and requests HIM (or HER?) for a plethora of boons.

As much as the first stanza is invigorating, the second is sobering. It reminds us that though we might be skilled and spirited, being spiritual is also mandatory because we do need the invisible hand of GOD to guide us to our Destiny!!!

So once again I ask myself – ‘Quo Vadis?’ Then I mutter the lines and ramble along...
